Spaghetti Squash

For months now I have heard of this thing called a Spaghetti squash. But unfortunately we could not get them in South Africa until recently. We bought ours from WoolWorths.

So I bought one and it sat in my fridge the whole week while I tried to figure out how to cook it and what to serve it with.Spaghetti Squast - raw

Finally after some research, I decided the best way to cook this bad boy was to roast him. I read online that you can microwave it or cook it in a slow cooker as well but apparently roasting does have a better flavour.

About the Spaghetti Squash
Spaghetti squash, also called vegetable spaghetti, is a group of cultivars of Cucurbita pepo (it’s a squash but Cucurbita pepo sounds cooler). The fruit ( Squash is a fruit? – learn something new everyday) can range either from ivory to yellow or orange in color. The orange varieties have a higher carotene content. It is commonly used as a substitute for pasta (banters rejoice).

We recently found a lot more information on the Spaghetti squash on Chew the World. They offer some great tips, information and recipes!

So this is actually pretty easy to cook.

  1. Preheat the oven to around 180C
  2. Cut the Squash in half ( I found it easier to do after cut some of the top off)
  3. Scoop out the seeds
  4. drizzle with olive oil
  5. Bake for 45min to an hour
  6. once cooked, use a fork to scoop out the Spaghetti like threads.
  7. Serve with pasta sauce of your choice.( we served our with a Tomato and basil sauce and some chicken)
